Mace Windu is one of the most complicated figures in the Jedi Order. He was noted for his power in the Force and was a member of the Jedi Council from before the events of The Phantom Menace until the time of his death in Revenge of the Sith. He was conflicted over the training of Anakin Skywalker and his suspicions over the boy turned out to be well-warranted, but were they a self-fulfilling prophecy?

1. Star Wars: The Phantom Menace— The first installment of the Skywalker saga gives us our first look at the Jedi Master and sows the initial suspicions he has about training the former slave.

2.Star Wars: Attack of the Clones— Pay careful attention to Mace’s first scene and his line about Count Dooku and assassination. This is key to understanding just how far the Jedi slide in their willingness to take part in a war. It also shows us the Jedi Master in action for the first time and it is quite an amazing thing.

3.Star Wars: The Clone Wars (“Storm Over Ryloth,” Season 1, Episode 19; “Innocents of Ryloth,”Season 1, Episode 20;“Liberty on Ryloth,” Season 1, Episode 21)— These episodes show us what Mace Windu is like when he’s commanding a battle, rather than reacting to a trap set by Dooku. He’s embraced the “great warrior” moniker that Yoda later insists might not make one great.

4.Star Wars: The Clone Wars (“Death Trap,” Season 2, Episode 20; “R2 Come Home,” Season 2, Episode 21; “Lethal Trackdown,” Season 2, Episode 22)— This series of episodes is a direct response to the consequences of the Jedi getting involved in a cycle of violence during the war and the toll it takes on Master Windu.

5. Star Wars: The Clone Wars (“Sabotage,” Season 5, Episode 17; “The Jedi Who Knew Too Much,” Season 5, Episode 18; “To Catch a Jedi,” Season 5, Episode 19; “The Wrong Jedi,” Season 5, Episode 20) — These episodes take the cycle of violence back to the Jedi, but it’s the violence of both public opinion and the decay of the things that made the Jedi peacekeepers.

6.Star Wars: The Clone Wars (“The Disappeared I and II,” Season 6, Episodes 8 and 9)— These episodes, pairing Mace Windu with Jar Jar Binks, further show the distrust of the Jedi throughout the galaxy. They also make for a great buddy-cop story featuring a really unlikely partnership.

7.Dark Disciple— Though Mace Windu appears in only a few scenes in this novel, it’s through his suggestion of an assassination that we see how much things have decayed for the Jedi.

8.Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith— And this is the end of it all. The final punctuation mark on the life of Mace Windu and the final nail in the coffin of the Jedi.

Bonus:Shatterpoint— Though this book is part of the Legends line of novels, it’s one of my favorite Star Wars books and it puts Mace Windu and his former Padawan, Depa Billaba, front and center. The events of this book were also hinted at in the Kanan comic book series, so who knows if more details will come out in the future.

This is, by no means, a complete list of Master Windu’s appearances, but these are the major arcs that tell his story. Once you’ve taken in that whole playlist all over again, I think you’ll have a new and different understanding for the struggles that both the Jedi and Master Windu went through during the twilight of the Jedi.
